The Livingston Sister City Program is a community-driven organization (Click here for more information about our board members) dedicated to fostering friendship, cultural understanding, and meaningful connections between Livingston, Montana and our sister city, Naganohara, Japan. Led entirely by volunteers, our program creates opportunities for students and families to experience life beyond their own borders while building lifelong relationships across cultures.

One of the cornerstone experiences of the program is our annual homestay exchange for teenage students from both communities. Through this shared experience, students have the opportunity to live with host families, immerse themselves in another culture, and gain a broader perspective of the world around them. The program is open to students ages 13–16 in grades 7–11.

For decades, the Livingston Sister City Committee has worked to strengthen our community through cultural, educational, and personal exchange. The benefits of the program extend far beyond travel — encouraging global awareness, lasting friendships, leadership development, and a deeper appreciation for both our similarities and differences.

Nestled in the heart of Southwestern Montana, Livingston is known for its rich western history, vibrant arts community, and breathtaking scenery. Surrounded by the Absaroka-Beartooth, Gallatin, and Crazy Mountain ranges, Livingston serves as the historic gateway to Yellowstone National Park. Its charming downtown, lined with preserved buildings from the 1880s and 1890s, reflects the spirit and character of the American West.

Our sister city, Naganohara, is located in the mountainous northwestern region of Gunma Prefecture, approximately 155 miles from Tokyo. Surrounded by the natural beauty of Mount Shirane and Mount Asama, Naganohara shares many similarities with Livingston — including a close-knit community, stunning landscapes, and a deep connection to tradition and nature.

Together, Livingston and Naganohara continue to build a bridge of friendship that spans generations, cultures, and continents.
